Mandriva Mini based on Moblin™ version 2 technology is now available
Product Based on New Version of Moblin Technology Offers Robust Netbook Experiences
Today, Mandriva, Europe’s leading Linux editor, released a new version of Mandriva Mini, a product based on Moblin™ version 2 technology, an optimized open source Linux operating system project for rich Internet and media experiences on Intel® Atom™ processor based devices.
Mandriva has proven its ability to succeed in target markets, notably with a Classmate PC design for education.
The Nigerian government has selected Intel- Atom processor-based classmate PCs running on Mandriva Linux for a nationwide
schools pilot in Nigeria. Mandriva is working with Intel Corporation and Technology Support Center Ltd. to provide 17,000 Intel-powered classmate PCs.
Armel Kermorvant, Vice President OEM/ODM, said that he was delighted to work with Intel.
“It allows Mandriva to focus on the development of operating systems, to target the OEM market which encompasses Netbook and to channel our energies into devices such as MID (Mobile Internet Device), Tablet Internet and other "intelligent" products derived from Linux. The launch of this new version of Mandriva Mini will enable users to interact with an ensemble of base applications (all kinds of Operating Systems) within a handful of seconds,” he added.
Moblin v2 technology, which is currently available for netbooks, is the latest from Moblin.org, an open source community that supports the creation and distribution of Linux-based operating system products for Intel Atom-based platforms, including netbooks, mobile Internet devices (MIDs), nettops, in-vehicle infotainment (IVI) and embedded systems. Intel launched Moblin in June 2007 and incubated the project until April 2009 when the Linux Foundation became the host of the community. Intel continues to contribute key technologies and work with the developer community to advance the effort.
"The release of Mandriva Mini is a great example of how Moblin™ v2 technology can be utilized to deliver specific benefits and capabilities to various industry market segments, as they did with the Classroom PC,” said Doug Fisher, vice president of Intel’s Software and Services Group and general manager of the System Software Division. “The Moblin community’s efforts have enabled Mandriva to deliver an exciting and compelling user experience to the classroom by building an excellent Linux product based on Moblin v2 technology that takes full advantage of the capabilities of the Intel® Atom™ processor."
